I would like to make a few comments regarding the list member who
sharply criticized others for not using Windows. Although I have made
the transition from DOS to Windows I recognize that there is a formidable
learning curve. Each blind computer user has their own level of
expertise. Not everyone may be ready to take the plunge. Using Windows
for me is somewhat easier since I have Braille displays in addition to
speech. Other people may not be so fortunate. I found that when I used
Windows without a Braille display it was a bit more challenging. I even
know sighted computer users who still prefer DOS. I think Windows access
for the blind will get better as more people use screenreaders, and
advocate for more accessible software. However, for some users DOS may
be adequate for the uses they have for their computers. I recognize that
we should try to use the same software sighted people use. I even
believe that Windows could become easier than DOS for blind people to
use. This has not happened yet. No one should be criticized for their
discomfort about switching to Windows. I still have another computer
which I happily use in DOS.
