Before I'd spend money for such a trial CD, I'd want to know how long ago
the OCR engine was developed for that software. I have a friend, who
purchased the Reading Advantage reading machine from Xerox, and she compares
it most unfavorably to the Kurzweil software, which she bought, because she
found that she couldn't upgrade the software on her dedicated reading
machine. Companies should be obliged to warn purchasers that their reading
machine software can't be upgraded if this is true.
I have been advocating for a long time that the blindness community should
get together to set up a Web site where all the adaptive technology people
could post information about their products, and folks could ask and answer
questions concerning the performance of hardware and software. This would
go a long way toward providing the information that we should all be able to
obtain prior to making the large investments we have to make in these
adaptive technology solutions.
