  Hello Everyone,
Been working on an old dinosaur(386 w/2mb RAM)and had to
reinstall Win 3.11 . Seems that it had previously been working with
Windows do not know the story as to why it may have stopped, what was
happening when I got it was that it was locking up at the Win 3.1
startup screen. What was different was that it would just stop there
with the Win 3.1 screen and I could type a DOS command there and it
would accept it? Could not see what I was typing but if I entered a
command it would execute it and then the normal Dos screen would
return. At this point I know I should have just formated the drive
and reinstalled from scratch, but my problem was that it has a 5.25
inch floppy and a 3.5 inch floppy and I cannot get it to boot from
the 3.5 and that is the only format that I have Dos in.There is no
option to switch these drives in the bios and cannot figure out how
else to do it.
After a couple attempts to just upgrade to Windows for
Workgroups(would just lock up)I tried installing to a different
directory which was succesful. It booted into Windows ok but when I
tried to go into file manager or control panel it would close down
Win and goto c: prompt? My thought was that it was a low Ram problem
and tried plugging in another 4 , 1MB strips of simms which I had
here in another old machine. Sure enough it worked perfectly fine
after doing this. What confuses me is how was it working before? I
guess maybe the hard drive could have been swapped from another
machine to this one(I have no knowledge of its history) but there
were files on there and it had been working. Think there was
something that Im missing in the configuration that would be causing
this trouble or that it is a hard drive that was transplanted from
another machine ???

Sorry for the long rambling message but would appreciate any
input.

                                            Thanks,
                                             Mark Walter
