According to Drs. Michael and Mary Dan Eades, author of "Protein Power"
as long as your kidneys are healthy, you have nothing to worry about -
they can handle it. When I first started a low carb, higher protein
diet, I felt some kidney discomfort for a couple of days, but no more
since then.

Are you sure you're eating too much protein? I don't have Eades book
with me, but if I recall correctly, it's .5 grams of protein per pound
of Lean Body Mass (your weight minus bodyfat %) per day if your
lifestyle is sedentary, .6-.7 grams if you're moderately active, .8 if
you're very active, and .9 grams if you're an athlete. You multiply
your LBM by that number and that's the amount of protein you need per
day to maintain your LBM. Your kidneys shouldn't have any problem with
that amount. Once you go over that amount, it does put a strain on the
kidneys to excrete the excess protein, but as long as you don't have any
kidney problems, they should be able to handle it.
