This is an updated summary on the question about whether there is a
mental health pro in the NYC area versed in the connection between
mental health and cd. I received more info since posting the original
summary on April 8. Here is a recap, plus additions and corrections
from subsequent replies:

> One recommended strict adherence to the diet and vitamin therapy to keep
> depression under control: the vitamin therapy to be supervised by a good
> nutritionist, and to be eased into gradually for best results.

> Another suggested the Princeton Bio Center:
> Subsequent posters say this center is no longer open. Dr. Jaffe who
> was in charge is back in suburban Washington, DC.

> A third suggested Jean Landon of the Greater NYC Chapter. 212/662-6435.
> I called Jean myself, left a message; as yet no reply.

> A fourth recommended joining a support group.

> A fifth suggested a clinical psychologist

Sixth: Milton Viederman (525 E. 68;212-746-3919)is a highly regarded
> psychiatrist whose special interests include "Reaction to Physical Illness,"
> according to the book How to Find the Best Doctors in NY.

New poster says a specialist at Columbia Presbyterian is mentioned in
Against the Grain. a) I cannot find the reference and b) I have a shrink
who is on the staff at this center, and he does not know who it might
be--I assume he would,as he is very curious and concerned about these
specific issues.

Another:"I am very much interested in the brain-gut connection. I am a
pharmacologist and also a celiac. There is evidence that some of the
receptors (eg, opiod, seratonin, etc) are similar in both the gut and
the brain. Seratonin is the chemical mediator very much involved in
depression. I would appeciate receiving any information you may have
gleaned from your inquiries. I have tried to convince so many
clinical psychologists of this connection. My suggestions have always
fallen on deaf ears and I am frustrated by their lack of sensitivity
to this issue. I am heartened that at least one clincial psychologist
is attuned to this issue."

Also, this message from "Barnett, Sarah" <[log in to unmask]>
I will be out of the office from Thursday, April 9, 1998 through
Tuesday, April 14, 1998 and will be unable to retrieve my email. If you
need immediate assistance, please telephone the operator, 202/457-1600.
This seems to be a reply from a mental health professional. Area code
202 is Wash,DC.
Thanks everyone.
