This is not about my family, but some one else's. I think the point is that
lots of people who should know better do not take the celiac diet seriously:
A (very very thin and pale) woman overheard me asking about ingredients at
a take-out counter the other day. She said she had the same allergy. Not
quite an allergy, I said, have you ever heard of celiac disease? Yes! she
said. I have had it since childhood!
She had a hint for me.
My son is a doctor, she explained, and he says take two unbuffered Bayer
before eating and you can having anything! (n.b. I have not tried this
myself and am not recommending it.)
But of course that doesn't stop the autoimmune reaction, I said, and the
other ramifications...
Oh yes, she said cheerfully, I have osteoporosis.
But she trusted her son, the doctor. So she eats whatever she wants. With a
couple of Bayer aspirin.
Yikes!
