Thank you, thank you, thank you, Bonnie Tyler for your postings on distilled
vinegar and pure alcohol!
Just after your posting was another which contained this information:
I spoke to Jerry Chelli (? spelling) at Newman's Own
(1-800-444-8705) and he said that the salad dressings and salsas
contain distilled vinegar and should not be considered safe.
I get so discouraged when I see this kind of posting because what it tells
me is that the food companies are now taking the most conservative line
(protecting themselves and who can blame them). I would hate to think
that companies may be leaving items off "safe lists" due to the presence of
distilled vinegar or alcohol. What I would like to see the companies say
about products containing vinegar is:
This product contains distilled vinegar and might not be safe for
some celiacs.
That way, those individuals with celiac disease who do not tolerate vinegar
can avoid the product but others of us can continue to enjoy it.
At least in this case the company stated that the items were not safe
because of the vinegar, so I have the information I need to continue to use
the products. I use Newman's Own salad dressings regularly without any ill
effects. The balsamic vinaigrette dressing makes a fantastic marinade for
grilled chicken breast (slice and use in fajitas)!
At any rate, I appreciate it when someone like Bonnie takes the time to give
us a scientific and reasoned perspective on things so that we can make
responsible decisions regarding our own health. I miss Don Kasarda's
posts! I respect the problems faced by those who must conform to the most
conservative interpretation of the celiac diet, but I want to have enough
information that I can make different decisions for myself.
