Hello List members:
In the past someone had asked me if I knew anything about a new drug
that was coming out on the market for osteoporosis.
>From the Greater Philadelphia Area Celiac Sprue Support Group, March
1998, a new drug called Evista (generic: raloxifene) should help those
diagnosed with osteoporosis. Evista is manufactured by Eli Lilly and
Company. It is used for prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis in
women (sorry - it isn't for men). Comments on the drug: Selective
Estrogen Receptor Modulator (SERM); has been referred to as a "designer
estrogen". This medication may be used by some women who cannot or do
not wish to take estrogen to prevent osteoporosis. Evista does not
increase the risk of uterine or breast cancer as has been demonstrated
by estrogen. It should not be used by women with a history of forming
blood clots of the leg, lung, etc. It may not be used with estrogen.
Evista appears to be slightly less effective then estrogen replacement
in preventing postmenopausal osteoporosis. Status: Evista at this time
is a GLUTEN-FREE medication.
Thanks to Phyllis Brogden, Chairwoman of the above mentioned
group for sharing this information with me and many other members.
