The Jewish preschools that some of my friends' children attend require
that no meat products be brought into the school and require dairy or
pareve meals to be brought or served at the school. Almost everyone
brings a cheese sandwich for lunch! Please verify that your school will
not permit dairy.
In my daughter's classroom, anyone eating an allergen eats at a
different table from her, everyone eats on a napkin to prevent
contamination of surfaces and everyone washes their hands with soap and
water after snacks or lunch. If milk is served, no straws are permitted
(to prevent kids from using it as a "pea shooter" to spray milk over
their classmates). She wears a Medic Alert bracelet and a medical
emergency plan on fluorescent-colored paper and bearing her picture is
posted by the phone. Her teacher and the teacher in the next classroom
are trained with the EpiPen. In case of a substitute teacher, both the
front office and the teacher next door will guide the substitute through
the proper procedures for food handling and dealing with emergencies.
The children were shown the food allergy video from FAN entitled
"Alexander, the Elephant who Couln't Eat Peanuts" and ALL staff members
(secretaries, janitors, etc) were shown a video about anaphylaxis from
FAN.
Best wishes to you and your child.
