Try to get the book THE SUGAR BLUES.

Scurvy became a problem when sailors were given rations of SUGAR and RUM.
These depleted the body of vitamin C and caused scurvy. For decades they
were given their daily rations of sugar and rum and developed scurvy. So,
the way the book explains it is, a person on a paleo (even all meat) diet
would not develop scurvy unless he supplemented his diet with rum and/or
refined sugar.
