Here is the summary about Nature Path Cereals.  rz

***There is a big debate going on right now if quinoa and buckwheat are
gluten free.  I read the other day that buckwheat was virtually gluten free
by nature but that it was grown in the same field as wheat.  They rotate the
crops and this causes cross contamination.  I personally leave them both
alone because this is not enough evidence for me to believe it is really
gluten free.  The CSA has them both listed on the avoid list.

***I love that cereal but I too found the Quinoa on the box and stopped..I
understand buckwheat is ok but Quinoa.  Please let me know or summarize..

***On the safe list I have, buckwheat and quinoa are both listed as safe with
three asterisks, meaning beware of wheat contamination.  Other than that, I'm
not sure.

***Wake up and smell the roses - or rather, read the archives for this celiac
list.  Quinoa and buckwheat are both gluten-free, altho some people may have
individual allergic reactions to those grain, to carrots, to anything.  So
eat and enjoy.

***Reesa, buckwheat and quinoa grains do not contain *gluten* so Natures

Some Celiacs have a reaction to these grains, but it is not a celiac
reaction.

***I thought quinoa was on the no list also, however, buckwheat was OK
despite the name.  I live in BC and I called the dietician hotline in
the front of the Vancouver phone book when my son was diagnosed.
(Allergist was of no help).  I would be very interested to hear of some
of the other responses.  Also, what is Mes Sunrise, -- a cereal?

***Buckwheat and Quinoa do not contain the protien that causes damage to the
small intestine.  Some celiac organizations claim that these contain gluten
but they have no proof that they do.  In fact, these "grains" are not part of
the grass family like wheat, barley, oats, and rye.  I believe that you can
get information about grains from the listserve.

Buckwheat and quinoa are gluten free, but buckwheat could have a
cross-contamination problem.  I'll eat it anyway.  There is a list file on
which cereal grains are considered to be gluten free, you can get it by
sending the message "GET CELIAC GRAINS" to the listserver (not the list).

***I think the main problem with buckwheat is the strong
chance of cross-contamination either during harvest (it is
apparently grown in the same areas as wheat) or during
processing. Many people do eat whole buckwheat kernels
without any trouble, but some of these do warn against the
flour because of contamination with wheat flour. With the
kernels whole, there is no confusing wheat with it.

I don't know why some people have quinoa put
on the no list. It isn't at all closely related to the other
gluten-laden grains. In fact, some lists say it is fine!
Other authorities say it has not been sufficiently studied.
I don't like it myself, but I can't say it made me sick. In
fact, I haven't heard of anybody who had a problem with
it. If you have ever seen the kernels, they are even smaller
than millet, and no other grain could be confused with it
that I know about.
