With my recent postings of Deli meat companies GF status-
I have received many warnings from people who have been ill from cross-
contamination of the sliced Deli meats. I have asked that the blade be
cleaned but wasn't happy at seeing the blade sprayed with??some type of
cleaning agent and not rinsed off. But I was recently informed that unless a
slicer is completely broken down and cleaned, the slicer isn't clean. This
was explained to me by the owner and operator of a Deli that sells only one
brand of meats and was explaining her cleaning policy.
I had thought that this would be one way around cross contamination by buying
from a deli which specializes in one Brand but there are always one or two
products that are still not GF with in a brand.
Prepackaged deli meats seemed to be the next answer to avoiding cross-
contamination. Still one has to wonder about the slicer and possible gluten
products of that company that may have been sliced on the same slicer--less
chance of contamination though.
I enjoy that fresh sliced deli product though but was about to give up the
idea of purchasing any Deli meats when I received this great suggestion:
<<Be careful about having your deli products sliced in the deli.
Remember that what has previously been sliced on their machines may
not have been gluten-free. I have gotten sick with
cross-contamination that way myself in the past. Now I get a chunk
of whatever, take it home, throw out the end slices, and slice it
myself!
>>Another person said she cooks her own meats. This no doubt being the safest
but it is time consuming.
thank you for your warnings as I am not one to have an obvious reaction to
gluten and I am still learning what many of you already know!
