I like Todd's response to your question, but would add that the elderly
don't always 0have a monopoly on chronic disease.  For example, it's quite
possible for a 20-something adult to develop diabetes.  See Gary Jackson's
post from 21 July 1997 on the rapid decline of glucose intolerance among an
isolated island population.
