Mary Jackson,

At a nutritional conference in New York City on Tues. 10/14/97, Dr. Atkins
stated that he had success treating juvenile diabetes using the nutrient
Calcium EAP along with a carbohydrate restricted diet. He did not go into
any details, as it was part of an answer to another question, but indicated
his patients needed less or no insulin. EAP has been used to treat multiple
sclerosis and other auto-immune diseases such as lupus and scleraderma.

In the May '96 issue of his newsletter, Atkins reports on a study (Amer.
Jour. of Clin. Nutr. vol 51, pp 489-91,1990) that suggests that diet may be
responsible for Type I diabetes, as it certainly is for Type II. The article
concluded that avoiding cow's milk protein for the first several months of
life may reduce the development of Type I diabetes or delay its onset.

The mechanism? The body attempts to protect itself form the foreign milk
proteins by producing antibodies. After initially attacking the bovine
albumin, these antibodies target a similar protein on the surface of the
insulin producing beta cells of the pancreas, destroying them too.

You could contact the Atkins Center for more information.
