aloha, y'all!

Just a gentle reminder that, due to the Columbus Day Holiday, VICUG NYC will
be holding its regularly scheduled General Membership Meeting TODAY,
MONDAY OCTOBER 20 from 6 to 8pm in The Associated Blind building, which is
located at 135 West Twenty-Third Street, halfway down the north side of
the street, between Sixth and Seventh Avenues.

It is extremely important that you attend thoday's meeting, and that you
tell as many people as possible about it... Why? Three reasons... First,
elections will be held at the commencement of the meeting. The slate
of nominees follows:

        President: Tom Dekker
        Vice-President: Janina Sajka
        Secretary: Peter Altschul
        Treasurer: Ruth-Ellen Simmonds
        Webmaster/Member-at-Large: Gregory J. Rosmaita
Members-at-Large: Vita Zavoli and Jay Leventhal

Additional nominations will be fielded immediately prior to the election. For
more information on VICUG NYC's electoral process, please consult the VICUG
NYC bylaws, which are available (as a hypertext document) on the web at:

        http://www.njin.net/caldwell/vicug/bylaws.html

Secondly, immediately following the elections, we will be asking the
General Membership to ratify the Executive Committee's decision to move
General Membership meetings from the second Monday of every month to the
second Tuesday of each month, so as to avoid conflicts with legal holidays
(such as Columbus Day).

Please note that elections will be held promptly and precisely at 6:25pm,
so that we can dedicate as much of our alloted time to our very special
guest speaker, Sarah Morley, the author of 2 highly acclaimed books for
blind computer users: "Window Concepts: An Introductory Guide for Visually
Disabled Users" and "Windows 95 Explained: A Guide for Blind and Visually
Impaired Users". Ms. Morley is visiting NYC from England, and has graciously
accepted the Executive Committee's invitation to address VICUG NYC. Ms.
Morley's approach is screen-reader independent--her courses/books teach
blind/VI users the logic and structure of the Windows environment itself,
rather than how to use Windows in conjunction with screen-reader X. This
is a highly effective strategy, for if one first learns how the operating
system functions, how to manipulate it using the keyboard, and how
keystrokes correspond to on-screen events, one is less dependent upon an
individual screen reader, and, can, to a certain extent, overcome the
built-in limitations of Windows-based screen readers. Ms. Morley's method
has been shown to increase the independence and confidence of blind/VI
users operating in the Windows environment.

Please spread the word far and wide that Ms. Morley will be addressing
VICUG NYC at The Associated Blind on October Twentieth.
