Hello Gary,

Here is what we have in our files.

Lactic acid can be dairy but VERY often is not. However if it is on a food
label, it probably was commercially produced by fermentation of sugar and
cornstarch. The only way to be sure is call the company and ask how the
lactic acid was derived?  Another thing to do look to see if the product is
labeled as Kosher Parve. The organization that certifies the product as
Kosher Parve will have determined if the lactic acid and all other
ingredients were derived from dairy. Furthermore our sources in the Kosher
supervision industry say that at this time they know of no companies making
lactic acid from dairy sources in the U.S. at this time. Below  are
technical explanation of lactic acid.

Lactic acid can be produced from milk by the action of lactic acid bacteria
and is produced when milk is fermented to make cheese. It is also found in
other sour foods, such as sauerkraut, fermented meats, molasses, and is the
preservative with some pickled foods such as pearl onions and olives, etc.

Lactic acid is a normal component of our bodies, i.e. produced by muscle
activity and normal metabolism and therefore it is in your blood and urine.
Because it is a byproduct of metabolism, it is a component of all plant and
animal tissues and it is impossible to keep out of our diet.
