anemia, and is developmentally delayed. he is hypotonic in his trunk and
hypertonic in his extremities. I was just wondering are all of you thats
children are behind on the weight are they also behind on there fine and gross
motor skills? I have asked if they thought that the reason that chris is so
far behind developmentally was because he is weak from his nutrition being so
bad but they have said that they didnt think that the nutrition could be the
only cause for being so far behind."

angela, i am an occupational therapist. whenever i hear words like
"hypertonic", "hypotonic", i think of those differences in muscle tone that
relate directly to neurologic function.....meaning, that when those words are
used, it means that the source for the motor delay is neurological problems,
rather than nutritional. your child's pediatrician and/or neurologist would
be a better source of information and referral for tone abnormalities and
developmental delay. also, please contact an early childhood intervention
(ECI) place in your area (they usually provide free or sliding scale services)
as soon as possible, to find of places in your area where you can get support
and referrals for any needed services, etc. The ECI program in our area
provides educational, health and nutritional, therapy, family support and
education services, to name a few, for the child/family.

.....i suspect chris needs immediate attention to address his developmental
delay/tone abnormalities, to provide him with the best possible foundation of
motor skills on which to base all future development and learning.
don't mean to be alarmist, but dont let the desire for his problems to be
fixable by nutrition keep you from seeking, obtaining, initiating the other
services he may need (you already may be doing this though..... ;>)

hope this helps
