People are seldom evil, perhaps, but people are frequently greedy.
Especially those in positions of power, or they probably wouldn't have
made it into positions of power in the first place.
I don't see a huge coordinated conspiracy. I see a few different groups
comprised of many people, some knowing and some not, that understand that
they stand to continue to profit by continuing the misinformation.

People are seldom evil; they're a lot more likely to be stupid. Herding
instinct, you know... People hate thinking, and follow the loudest voice,
rather than bother looking into the evidence and thinking for themselves.
It's easier that way.
Speaking of thinking, did anyone see last night's 'Daria'?
