Carrageenan is a complex carbohydrate that is obtained primarily from
the refining of seaweed. It is an additive to various food products,
especially diary. It is also used in non-food applications such as
cosmetics.

It is sometimes used as a fat replacer e.g. McDonald's McLean Deluxe, or
as a water binder to improve the production yield of a food product,
e.g. as a dairy additive.
