Hi All,

I know nothing beyond what's posted below about this program. Perhaps
those working on access to math and science could pursue funding for some
of their projects from this program. The information comes from:

   Linkname: Growth Initiatives For Teachers

                   Growth Initiatives For Teachers (GIFT)

The GTE GIFT program encourages innovative math and science
teaching by annually providing 120 outstanding educators with funds
for professional development activities and hands-on classroom
     projects.
     _________________________________________________________________

The GTE Foundation provides $12,000 awards for two-member teams of
math and science teachers under its "Growth Initiatives for
Teachers" (GIFT) program. Public and private school math and
science teachers, grades 7 to 12 (grade 6 only if in a middle or
junior high school) in 35 states and the District of Columbia are
eligible to win $7,000 for a school enrichment project and $5,000
($2,500 for each team member) for professional development
     activities.

The projects help students learn to use new technologies and see
real-world applications of science and mathematics. The GIFT
program also includes a one-week seminar for winning teachers. The
1997 seminar included sessions at GTE Laboratories, Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, Museum of Science in Boston, US Department
of Education, and the Smithsonian Institution. Teachers also met
with their congressional representatives, along with officers from
the Annenberg/CPB Math and Science project and the Woodrow Wilson
     National Foundation.

Teachers in the following states are eligible to participate: AL,
AZ, AR, CA, CO, CT, DC, FL, GA, HI, ID, IL, IN, IA, KY, ME, MD, MA,
MI, MN, MO, NE, NH, NM, NC, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, WA, WV,
     WI.

Since 1983, some 1,500 teachers have received GIFT grants totaling
approximately $9 million. For more information or to request an
application, send e-mail to: [log in to unmask], or call 1-800-315-5010.
