Is it safe to take Calcium supplements without advice from a doctor?

I just ask because a few months ago I was put on Calcichew D3 (Calcium with
vitamin D) after a low bone density. I was told that I must have a blood
test (calcium) done after two months in order to test for hypercalcaemia.

Sure enough the blood test revealed a slightly raised calcium level and the
dose was reduced. I have now to have another test in two months and
thereafter every six months. Apparently if the calcium level is too high
kidney stones can result. This just made me wonder if it is advisable to
take supplements without advice. Just a thought.
