My mom suffers from severe anemia - her Hemoglobin count is presently 67.
For those of you in other countries with other scales, 120 - 135 is
considered good, under 120 is heading towards anemia, under 100 is quite
anemic, and usually around 70 people need blood transfusions. Her doctors
tell her that her iron count is good, therefore she does not have perniscious
anemia (treatable by Vit B12 shots). She has CD and Sjogren's, follows a
very strict GF diet for two years now. She takes a Iron and Folic acid
supplement daily. She also has a host of other problems that are not
completely under control - High blood pressure, potassium and sodium
imbalances, bizarre EKG results, severe exhaustion ....
Here are my questions:
1) Has anyone else on the list had experience with chronic and untreatable
anemia?
2) Does anyone know of other causes of anemia that perhaps the doctors are
not aware of?
I am aware that older people (Mom is 64) tend to have lower Hemoglobin counts
but not quite this low.
