I thought this post from the British blind computer list was
interesting. Don't forget the VIPACE meeting this afternoon. We ought
to be discussing picnic plans as well as learning more about WebSpeak
from Jim V.

This is a special announcement concerning the new Omni 1000 Version 2.0
from Kurzweil Educational Systems, Inc. (KESI).

Version 2.0 is all new and will be shown at the forthcoming US Summer
conventions of the NFB (National Federation of the Blind) and the ACB
(American Council for the Blind) in New Orleans, LA, and Houston, TX,
respectively, and soon after at Sight Village in the United Kingdom.

There are many new and exciting things to know about Version 2.0. For
example:

User-Interface:
Omni 1000 now features Windows 95(TM) style pull-down menus. Novice
users can still continue to operate Omni 1000 via the 17-button numeric
keypad while those users more comfortable with running standard Windows
95 applications will be able to operate Omni 1000 using standard Windows
95 conventions.

Editing:
Omni 1000 will now allow you to edit scanned documents on the fly. Not
only is text that you type spoken aloud as you type, Omni 1000 can even
speak a highlighted section of text for you before you cut or paste.
Naturally, an Undo feature is also available.

Favorites:
Our 'favorites' feature allows you to more easily categorize and locate
files.

Insert Page:
How many times have you scanned a document and found that in your haste
you skipped over a page before scanning it, or have you ever scanned 2
pages only to find that one of the pages is a table?
Omni 1000 now allows you to re-scan a page and/or insert a page or pages
into an existing document.

Find:
Omni 1000 will allow you to search for any word in a document.

Bookmarks:
Omni 1000 allows you to create, delete, and browse any number of
bookmarks within a document. Jump to any place within a document or just
let Omni remember the last place you left off.

Text Highlighting, Color, Magnification:
You can now increase magnification of scanned text as well as highlight
the currently spoken word. Foreground and background colors can also be
set with your choice of 16 colors.

Hot Key for Background Recognition:
Picture the scene. You're working in a word processing program when all
of a sudden you're handed something you've got to read. You minimize
your application - what an inconvenience - you load up your OCR program
and begin scanning. But then you remember you're using Omni 1000 Version
2.0.
Now picture the new scene. You're working in a word processing program
when all of a sudden you're handed something you've got to read. You
place the document on the scanner and then press the 'Hot Key' which you
have defined, we'll use CTRL and the SPACE BAR for this example, and
seconds later the document is scanned. Best of all, you never left your
word processing program.

File Formats:
You asked for file formats so we're giving them to you. All 127 of them
to be exact. Now, if we can just find that version of Xplus 1.0 for Dos
1.2....

Alternative Speech Synthesizers:
It has come to our attention that some people preferred to use their
DECtalk speech synthesizer. Well good news, Omni 1000 now supports SSIL
drivers so that you may use the speech synthesizer of your choice. You
can also utilize your screen reading program too, if you prefer.

We believe Omni 1000 Version 2.0 is the superior alternative reading
product for the blind.

Bring your choice of documents to either of the aforementioned
conventions to try Omni for yourself, or make an appointment with one of
our growing number of distributors throughout the world. In the UK, you
can call our Authorized Master Distributor, Sight & Sound Technology
Limited of Northampton at (01604) 798000.

A special note to those BCAB members planning on attending Sight Village
'97 in July. KESI will be hosting a special 2 hour presentation of Omni
1000 Version 2.0 each day starting at 11:00 AM. Numbers are limited to
25 people each day so call the Sight & Sound Technology number now to
reserve your place. Naturally, refreshments will be provided for our
guests.

Otherwise, call KESI in the USA at 001-617-893-8200 and request your
complimentary demo copy of Omni 1000 Version 2.0 (demo CDs available in
late July 1997). Requests may also be made via email to:
