Lactic Acid is a byproduct of incomplete glucose metabolism. It should not be confused with lactose, which is milk sugar. There are plenty of non-dairy sources of lactic acid. 

When you exercise and your muscles are stiff afterwards, it's due to the buildup of lactic acid.

Subject:  Tofutti imitation cream cheese in the UK

This product has just got new labels and the list of ingredients now
includes LACTIC ACID of NON-DAIRY ORIGIN.

That might be all very well for vegans, but I don't like the sound of
it, and I suspect that if you are on this list for health reasons, you
won't like it either.

I notice that Tofutti is also a North American brand. Check your labels.
