I discussed this with an airline once, in the days when we got meals
on our short two-hour flights.
Explained the kid couldn't have dairy of any kind. The agent
suggested a fruit plate as a good
alternative, and I accepted it. Guess what's on the fruit plate? A
big ol' scoop of cottage cheese!
And every piece of fruit is touching the cheese.

I took it to the restroom and washed the fruit as carefully as I
could, took out my knife and peeled
it, and my son ate the fruit, finally. That was the last time I
trusted the airline. Now I carry a bag of
food on the plane - the rest of us can eat whatever is offered,
pretty much, but I take food he can
and will eat. We never know when we'll get bumped and have to spend
the night in a place where
there's no Chinese food or McDonald's to tide him over.

psam
