We have a 2 1/2 year old daughter who was recently diagnosed in July with
Celiac.
We knew something wasn't right for almost 2 years due to her constant
diarrhea, distended belly and general discomfort.
Our concern is she has also had pericarditis ( fluid around her heart )
twice. The first episode was this summer when she was hospitalized due to
an enlarged heart, enlarged liver and fluid around her lungs. 6oz of fluid
was removed from around her heart and then she was placed on laysix ( I
forget the correct spelling, but it is a diuretic). Over this past
weekend she again began to have labored breathing and we took her to the
emergency room. An echocardiogram and several X-rays show increased fluid
around her heart. She has now been placed on Pediapred to decrease the
inflammation .
Has anyone heard of any relation between pericarditis and celiac either in
adults or children? Has anyone experienced this themselves or with their
children?
Her GI doctor suspects a relationship but cannot find any similar cases.
Any help would be appreciated.
