Today I called the maker of Citrucel dietary fiber (800-453-4865). A woman
there named Sonya checked with company authorities and told me:
1) The Citrucel formula does not include gluten per se;
2) The manufacturer cannot guarantee that Citrucel is completely GF because
it is possible that there might be some cross-contamination in what they
called "only trace amounts." The examples they gave: Perhaps a portion of a
wheat plant blew over from a neighboring field and got processed with the
methylcellulose. Or maybe a supplier of one of the inactive ingredients such
as hydrogenated vegetable oil had their oil contaminated by a trace amount of
gluten.
I suspect that because of liability caselaw these are the answers we are
going to hear more and more regarding products formulated as GF -- that the
manufacturers know better than to guarantee it.
It's up to each of us to determine our own level of risk based on our
individual sensitivities.
