NURSE YOUR BABIES!
I nursed Evan until he weaned himself at 10 months. He was
diagnosed with a milk allergy at 2 and as a celiac at 2 1/2.
I knew from the beginning that something was wrong with his
"tummy"--not "just colic". Yes, he was very colicky. Evan also had
frequent diarrhea (very uncommon for a breast-fed baby), passed
mucus, and had green stool. Despite that, Evan grew well until he
was fully weaned. Then his growth took a rapid drop on the charts.
By 20 months he refused to sit for a meal. At 25 months he was very
sick.
Although I understand that small amounts of gluten were passed to
Evan through my milk, I am confident that it was my milk that kept
him growing well and otherwise healthy. In retrospect, if I had
known of his celiac disease, being gluten-free myself may have
helped with Evan's "colic". Nursing him longer may have helped,
too, so I commend S. Christie for nursing her toddler. Evan is very
small (not on the charts) and is suffering with developmental
delays.
Evan's baby sister is now 13 months. We do not know if Ashley has
celiac disease. She nurses and eats only g-f table foods. Me and my
milk are "gluten-reduced", but not always totally "-free". Ashley
has been free of the "colic" symptoms. I worry that she may be a
celiac, too. Ashley cannot tolerate milk products and she is
dropping down on the growth charts very quickly. She has had only
one or two "accidental" tastes of gluten.
