I recently flew to Indonesia and back with American and Garuda. The
American flight was fine. I received a normal breakfast, but received a
rice cake instead of a roll.

On the Garuda flight they made an effort to provide gf entrees, but they
kept serving me wheated rolls on the side. In other words, they replaced
the warm entree, but the side thingies were all the same, including desert
cakes, etc. They also served me fish for one meal, which I am deathly
allergic to. I don't understand why they serve so much bread, because most
Indnesians don't like and don't eat bread, and ended up leaving it anyway,
I noticed. Besides, Indonesia has such a wonderful assortment of cakes
made of rice and sticky rice flour--not to mention the fact that every meal
there is eaten with rice--that I really had to wonder why they couldn't
just provide a traditional Indonesian meal? Another strange thing for
Garuda: on domestic flights, where they only serve snacks, they refused to
take requests for special meals ("it's only a snack"), even though I
actually received a "gf" meal on a flight booked from the US (even though
it again was the same thing as the other guests received).

An unrelated annoyance: one of the meals was served while I was using the
toilet, and the "gentleman" who sat next to me ate my meal while I was
gone!!! Since he was Mexican and spoke neither English nor Indonesian, he
was unable to understand my curses!

One the way home the flight from Jakarta to L.A. was delayed because of an
airshow and rerouted throught Manila (!), and for some reason that screwed
up the computers, so that there was no special meal on the leg from Hawaii
to L.A. Of course I missed my connection from L.A. and when I rebooked the
flight from Jakarta, I was unable to secure a gf meal successfully. So
needless to say when I arrived at home I was exhausted and also rather
hungry.

Yes, of course I should have "planned ahead", but sometimes when you are
getting ready to travel you have a million other things to plan, and don't
want to spend your last hours in a place scrounging for safe food.
