The Listowners appreciate the opportunity to routinely inform you of the
continued growth of the List and to remind you of recent changes. The
following is an index of the subjects in this message:

1. 1400 subscribers
2. Usenet and WWW access
3. Possible error message after you make a posting to the List
4. File name changes
5. Stopping mail while on vacation
6. Cel-Kids
7. Welcome file changes
8. Celiac, Wheat Intolerance, Autism

1. 1400 subscribers

The Listowners are pleased to announce that Celiac has reached 1400
subscribers from 30 countries. Here is a list of the countries:

Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Fiji, Finland,
France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Ireland,
Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland,
Portugal, Saint Lucia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden,
Switzerland, Turkey, USA.

Some additional countries may not show in this list because of the way
that the Internet tracks countries and host systems. For example,
CompuServe is offering access in Europe. But there is no way to
determine if the ID is located in the US or Europe.

2. Usenet and WWW access

The List added two major benefits during the last month with the
addition of Usenet access to the List and a WWW site for the storage
of copies of the 97 system reference files.

The address for the Usenet gateway is:
        bit.listserv.celiac

The address for the WWW site is:
        http://www.fastlane.net/homepages/thodge/archive.htm

3. Possible error message after you make a posting to the List

After posting a message to the Celiac List, you may receive a message
like the following sample:

   Forwarded message (CompuServe_Mail <[log in to unmask]>)

    >Message "Celiac Listowner 1400 announcement", sent at
    >08:09 EDT on 17-June-96, could not be delivered to [104173,99999] at
    >08:12 EDT on 17-June-96 because the recipient mailbox is full.

This example shows a single problem in distributing your message to the
1400 Celiac subscribers (you may get more than one such message). This
user ([log in to unmask]) was unable to receive any messages
because his/her mailbox is full. Other list members received their copy
with no problem and you did not do anything wrong.

If you will forward the message to Mike Jones ([log in to unmask]), the
ID will be temporarily set to nomail and we will attempt to inform the
user of this problem. By setting the ID to nomail, the message is not
repeated for later posters.

Messages of this type are normally sent to the St Johns Listserv and
then to Mike. Some systems do not follow the standards and you may
occasionally see the message after making a post.

4. File name changes

Several changes were made to the welcome message and the system file
names during the last few months to facilitate downloading of the files.
For example:

The expert files (EXPERT94, EXPERT95) were changed to quarterly files
(EXP94-4, EXP95-1, EXP95-2, EXP95-3, and EXP95-4). The same pattern
will be used for the 1996 files. These files are a collection of
postings to this List by our experts.

The North America support group listing (GROUPSNA) was split into two
files: a USA listing (GROUPSUS) and a Canadian listing (GROUPSCA).

To obtain a current list of all available resources, send these
commands to [log in to unmask]:

   GET CELIAC WELCOME CELIAC
   INDEX CELIAC
   GET CELIAC FILEDESC CELIAC

5. Stopping mail while on vacation

Several Listmembers have asked how to keep from missing messages that
were distributed while they were away from their computer on vacation.
For extended vacations of a week or more, it is a good idea to stop
your mail; this avoids a possible problem with a full mailbox.

When you are ready to go on vacation send this command to
[log in to unmask]:

   SET CELIAC NOMAIL

When you are ready to restart the mail and read old messages, send
these commands to the listserv:

   SET CELIAC MAIL
   GET CELIAC LOGyymmx
 (and add as necessary)...
   GET CELIAC LOGyymmy
   GET CELIAC LOGyymmz

Where "yy" is the year (96, etc.), "mm" is the month (01, 02, etc.),
and "x", "y", and "z" is replaced by a code for the week... "A", "B",
etc. as follows:

A 1st through 6th of the month
B 7th through 13th of the month
C 14th through 20th of the month
D 21st through 27th of the month
E 28th of the month on

The actual number of files requested is based upon the dates of your
vacation.

So if you were on vacation July 4 through 25, you would request files
LOG9607A, LOG9607B, LOG9607C, and LOG9607D. You will get a few extra
messages for 1 through 4 July. These files can then be read by any
word processor or text editor.

6. Cel-Kids

One of our initial subscribers asked a good question this week. It
appears that in June of 1995 when we started the Cel-Kids e-mail List
they were away from the List.

The question was how to start a List for parents of celiac children.
We reminded her that Cel-Kids was designed to facilitate discussion for
celiac families. This sister List is designed to foster discussions
that are unique to the family. We request that subscribers to Cel-Kids
also subscribe to Celiac where discussions of a general celiac nature
should be held.

7. Welcome file changes

The welcome file has gone through several revisions since it was
initially issued. The Listonwers would like to encourage everyone to
request an updated copy by sending this request to
[log in to unmask]

GET CELIAC WELCOME CELIAC

8. Celiac, Wheat Intolerance, Autism

This List was initially designed for discussions about celiac disease
and related complications. Our posts sometimes branch into several
other areas. The Listowners welcome these discussions if they are a
logical extension of CD, or of living with a Gluten-Free diet. The
Listowners have just a few special requests.

When a subject is more applicable for discussion on a List dedicated
to another medical condition, it is best not to post it on the CELIAC
List. For example, discussions regarding Autism and the gluten-free
diet are appropriate for this List; but other aspects of Autism are
not. Instead, other aspects of Autism should be discussed on the
AUTISM e-mail List, where there is a wider background of subscribers
available that are dealing with the same problem.

If you are not familiar with the Autism List, you subscribe by sending
to: [log in to unmask]

        SUB AUTISM YourFirstName YourLastName

Also, when talking about products that may be appropriate for your
diet but not the GF diet, please make a reference to this fact.
