As a newly diagnosed celiac in the fall of l994, I found myself continually
frustrated by my inability to understand the medical terminology I
encountered in visits to the doctor.  Looking up particular terms in
Dorland's Medical Dictionary in my office library, I found myself swimming
in a sea of even more unknown words and phrases. My last science course had
been biology for liberal arts majors in l964!  I decided to look for an
easy, introductory book which would explain some of the mysterious terms.
Looking through a number of texts in a junior college bookstore, I
discovered one I liked--"Essentials of Human Anatomry & Physiology," 4th
ed., by Elaine N. Marieb, R.N., Ph.D. (Redwood City California:
Benjamin/Cummings Publishing Co., Inc.,l994, paperbound,$34.10). I have
used this book as a reference, and have read through most of it.  Aimed at
community college students with a limited science background, it has a
chapter on basic chemistry and biochemistry, a helpful glossary, and good
illustrations, such as that on page 407 of the small intestine's villi and
microvilli. This book does a good job of explaining complex material in
plain English.
 
I have no information on how to get it except the following.  Publisher's

l994 at the Merced College Bookstore.
 
I am now looking for a way to increase my knowledge of chemistry without
actually taking a course. Possibly a college level chemistry text would
help, if it is clearly written.  Any recommendations?
