Some of us are fortunate enough to be able to absorb what we need from a
healthy diet once we go gluten free. Others, probably those who have
more intestinal damage seem to require, at least temporairily, the use of
supplements to compensate for the reduced absorptive capacity.

The effectiveness of supplements is base on a simple principle of
chemistry: In a reaction increasing the concentration of one of the
reactants increases the amount of the product (all other things being
equal). This is, of course a gross oversimplification, but the basic
idea holds true. The use of supplements did for me what even the most
nutrient dense diet could not. And, judging from the reactions I got to
my posts, this was true for a number of other celiacs as well.

Because most of the vitamins*1(especially the B-complex*2) are non toxic
and without undesirable side effects even in very large doses to suffer
from deficiency symptoms without trying them seems to me to be foolish.
(But you should *not* rely only on supplements - the nutrient dense foods
are still important because of the associated co-factors which supplements
do not supply.)

_______
*1 A is also non toxic if taken in the form of Beta-Carotene. E
should be kept "within reason" - probably not more than 400 or 800 IU/day.

*2 the "flush" from nicotinic acid (totally harmless) can be avoided by the
use of niacinamide.
