Hi, My name is Nadia and I think I am gluten intolerant. I have an
appointment on Monday with my family doctor.
I have suffered my whole life with horrible stomach aches and all the
pleasantries that go with them. My doctor told me that I have IBS. I
wanted to learn more about IBS to did some research and I discovered that
many of my symptoms were similar to celiac disease. I think one of my
worst problems was horrible bloating. I could not fit into any of my pants.
I decided to go gluten free for a while and I have never felt
better. Last night I had three pieces of pizza and just after consuming
them, I got gas and bloating and I felt like I wanted to be sick. I also
HAD to go to the bathroom 3 hours later. I felt like my old self again.
This sort of confirms my suspicions that I may have celiac disease.
My big question is what can I expect from my initial doctor's visit. Will
the test be done there? What exactly are the tests? Biopsy, blood??
What does a biopsy involve (I have never been in the hospital or anything)
Should I load up on glutens or will this just be an initial visit. Are
you usually referred to a specialist? I feel kind of scared as I do not
know what to expect. I would love to hear about people's experiences.
Thanks a lot,
NADIA (in Hamilton ON, Canada)
