My 80-year-old father has been having problems with memory loss (as well
as depression and fatigue) in recent years. He's agreed to go to a
specialist to see if anything can be done about it. Although he has no
obvious physical symptoms, I think the possibility that celiac disease
may be causing or aggravating his symptoms should be considered (along
with other possibilities, of course). (His mother almost certainly had
CD, as do I, and I suffered from severe enough mental confusion, fatigue,
and depression before going on a gluten-free diet to wonder if the diet
wouldn't help him too. My mother, alas, thinks it would be too much
trouble to learn to cook differently even for a week or two, though I'm
sure she would if a doctor suggested it.)

I'm afraid the specialist he sees may not be familiar with CD, and I'm
hoping someone can recommend an article that describes the mental effects
of CD, or other appropriate literature, that he and my mother might give
to his doctor. Can anyone help?

P.S. If anyone has advice on a specialist, I'd be grateful for that too.
He'll be asking for a referral from the family doctor in Plymouth, NH,
which means he'll probably be sent to the Mary Hitchcock Clinic in
Hanover, NH, though Mass General is also a possibility.
