At the American Celiac Society conference last June 10-11, 1994 Joe Murray
told the following story (as recounted in The Sprue-Nik Press, March 1995,
posted to this list in March):

Not every Celiac patient suffers weight loss or has diarrhea. One of
his patients is a woman who weighed 400 lbs. when she was diagnosed.
Her symptoms included nocturnal pain, and constipation. After
checking the stomach and some other testing, they did a small
intestine biopsy. When they found the classic flat villi, they
suspected a lab mix-up because the woman's symptoms were so atypical.
In this case, the woman was suffering from cravings that caused her to
greatly overeat. She was nutritionally over- compensating for the
small intestine damage. After being diagnosed, the patient went on
the GF diet, lost some of these cravings, and promptly lost 50 lbs.

Could it not be that a lot of obese people can't control their eating
because they are really gluten-intolerant?

This year's conference is July 14-15th and is being sponsored by the
University of Maryland School of Medicine. Joe Murray will be speaking on
the Clinical presentation of Celiac Disease in adults. Many of us on this
list are planning to attend. For more info see Sue Goldstein's posting of
4/26/95 to this list, or call 410-328-0812.
