First, realize that this is the opinion of a layperson, not a medical
professional.
I've read and heard of the relationship between CD and type I diabetes
several times, with the most recent being the Celiac Conference held in
Baltimore in July of this year. My understanding is a higher percentage
of celiacs get type I (insulin-dependent) diabetes than in the general
population. In other words, a celiac is more likely to have type I
diabetes than a non-celiac.
I believe someone asked about a link between type II diabetes and CD at
the Baltimore conference. The answer was no. In other words, a celiac
is no more likely to have type II (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes than
a non-celiac.

A celiac is also no LESS likely to have type II diabetes than a
non-celiac. That means there will be some unlucky souls that do have
both. Your friend might be in this category. It might be worthwhile
for him to see a gastroenterologist and get it checked out.
