Phil and Dan,
This is a lovely sentiment - and signed by many eminent people who thrive on the written word and the power of speech to influence, inspire and encourage a market of ideas.
But what happens when dialogue fails? As it can and - too often - does? What is the recourse of the marginalized?

Phil:
It is a beautiful statement. I’d sign it.
I recognize names from all across the political spectrum as signatories.
It’s nice to be on the same side of the fence with you — again.

Regardless, I am in agreement with an open letter published in Harper’s by a number of progressive thinkers and writers. I am glad to see it. I am relieved to be able to stand with them. While we would disagree on various issues and topics that could be expressed through free speech, I find rich agreement with the value on free speech, the ability to debate our differences and to do so with good faith toward one another.
