Subject: Re: [VICUG-L] switching between open documents with Narrator running

Hi All,

Alt+tab is a Windows command, so it works in Narrator the way it does in
Jaws or NVDA: alt+tab takes you to another open window.

Though Narrator is close to being a first-choice screen reader, it's
still got enough quirks that each new version is better than the
previous one. The version I have on my personal computers is 1909, and
alt+tab works well. The version I have on my work computer is probably
from 2017. I notice things are a little buggy on the work computer.
Sometimes alt+tab does take me to the next open window, but Narrator
doesn't announce the name of the new window, so I think focus hasn't
moved until I start tabbing. Weirdly, it's more likely to happen with
specific Windows. Also, on the work computer, instead of just moving to
another open window, pressing alt+tab sometimes takes me to the task
bar, where I can arrow through the open apps and press enter on the one
I want. In other words, if you're not running a more recent version of
Windows 10, you may get bugginess.

I think I'm not understanding part of the original post. You mention
getting to Narrator settings when you use alt+tab. This happens because
Narrator by default is one of the open windows. To change this, you can
go into Narrator settings to check the box that says something about
running Narrator from the system tray. Another thing to keep in mind is
that, if the computer is slow for some reason (e.g., it's still booting
or it's running a virus check in the background), pressing alt+tab
works, but there may be a little bit of a delay. I have the feeling I'm
not answering, so feel free to ask again.

About Narrator commands, the Narrator user guide is a good resource.
Appendix B has the complete list of commands. The URL for the guide is here:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/22798/windows-10-complete-guide-to-narrator

Hope this helps.

Ciao
