I've got no idea what application you're talking about or what you're 
running on your computer, so take this with a grain of salt. Typically, 
when you enter an edit field for the first time, everything is 
highlighted. Once you start typing, the text that was there is replaced 
by what you're typing. therefore, you don't need to delete the stars 
before you start typing. If you do anything in the edit field before you 
start typing, such as using the arrow keys or the home or end keys then 
you'll be inserting text, so you'll want to delete the old password 
before you start typing. I hope this helps.
