Actually Donna, there might be a solution for something kind of like pathfinder. It's called Brainport, whose headquarters is in Wisccsin, as far as I know, as it's been a long time since I've checked the site. I was interested, and still would like to, participate in trials in my area. The technique is to have a device that has a part that sits on your tongue that puts out a low current of electricity, like pop-rock candy. The sensor part detects what is in the area you are working in, and you will feel the shapes of objects in front of you. It even senses movement of objects. A woman who was blind from birth was able to bat a ball away that was thrown to her- for the first time!
I don't remember the exact website, but you can do a search for brainport. Mybe you'll find other resources that way too.

HTH,

Sharon H.
