First, thanks for the detailed instructions.  I've filed them away for 
future reference.

Coincidentally, I selected a default browser on my new Win10 desktop 
yesterday and, following the suggestion on another list, simply entered 
the word default in the search box.
And choosing a default browser popped up as an option.  

So, there appears several approaches to getting this done.
