40% of our capacity for happiness is within our power to change.
This self-help, how-to book is clear about what is out of one's
control, and suggests a personalized approach towards what might be
changeable.
For instance, on overthinking: "The combination of rumination and
negative mood is toxic." (p 113)
In the author's blog, linked below, the oldest entry summarizes the
strategies. The book, in addition, contains questionnaires to
determine one's own 'set point' and which of the dozen strategies
might be helpful.

(My own set point on the depression test was much lower than
average. I felt pretty upset by the score even though the finding
that I am that depressed was not new to me.
I'm thinking that once people who cope with mood swings, fear, voices
and visions are diagnosed, the system only expects 'recovery', return
to something, and not the capacity for ongoing improvement and life
quality, and that we are apt to take on that expectation ourselves
and struggle along in too much pain.
