Agree with you.  My first suspicion might be your wifi card.
How about trying to connect the desktop directly to the router via an 
ethernet cable and see if it works that way?
I once had a desktop that displayed this same behavior and 
couldnwirelessly contact the router whatever we tried.  Over several 
months, more out of curiosity rather than expecting to solve it, we tried 
several routers and wireless cards to no avail -- with the direct connect 
ethernet cable, it worked flawlessly.
We never figured out twhy the desktop lost its wireless capability; but, 
deciding to reinstall Windows for other easons, it found the router the 
first time around.

No, I don't think the cable company will be any help on this other than 
telling you it's not their service that is at fault.
