I understand that about half of celiacs are also intolerant of dairy products but here is a puzzler:
Can any of you tolerate whole milk, but react to powdered milk?
I correspond with a federal prisoner who is biopsy diagnosed as celiac, but is nevertheless regularly served cross-contaminated foods or (during current COVID lockdowns) pre-packaged foods clearly containing wheat.
Aside from this persistent issue that requires him to purchase extra commissary foods to sustain a minimum daily calorie count and not waste away, he just wrote:
"I explode every time the powdered milk arrives. I will not eat any more, and they keep sending cereal with powdered milk like empties I sent you, only the carton milks have been acceptable, which are all plainly marked G. F. & Un-modified milk product on each carton!!!"
Any insights from personal or clinical experience are appreciated!
As a secondary question, I’ve been helping him document the food packaging and keep a copy of his log of meals and symptoms, and if any lawyer on this list is interested in some pro-bono work to get him moved into a FMC (Federal Medical Center for prisoners) from the regular FCI he is now at because they can’t provide his medical diet there, please let me know!
Jack
