I've had the experience where the system freezes up when I'm using Jaws
and Firefox. It used to happen fairly often a couple of years ago. Now
it happens only once in a long while.

You might try resetting Firefox. I think you go into the Help Menu and
press enter on Troubleshoot. The screen that comes up asks if you want
to Refresh Firefox so it's like new. Press enter on the Refresh button
or link, and I believe you have to press enter on Refresh again on the
next screen.

NVDA sometimes does but usually it becomes silent and sluggish while things are happening in updates or defender. NVDA does have rising tones when videos or software are downloading.
