Subject to the possibility that the industry is too small overall
for anyone but screen-reader users to care, is it worth asking
whether the combination will result in a violation of the
antitrust laws? What percentage of the current screen-reader
market will the new combined ownership actually control?

Steve

Yes, Ana G and Mike Pietrik nailed it! Unfortunately, this move
towards monopoly or monopolistic competition has been going on
for quite some time within the sighted community so it should be
no surprise that this is taking place within the community for
blindness products as well (in fact, one should be less surprised
by its happening within the blindness community, given that the
blind and visually impaired populations are such an insignificant
portion of the total population). On the bright side, I have
heard about some movement in the availability of inexpensive
braille displays in one, and possibly two, other corners, and
that, at least, may keep VFO from raising braille display prices
in the near term.

Every story has at least two sides if not more.

I agree with ana.

I wonder whether anyone has raised antitrust concerns, also
whether it is too late to do so.

I'm not sure I understand the benefit of this merger. So now VFO
Group
owns two competing screen readers, two competing screen
magnifiers, and
two competing lines of braille displays. That sounds like VFO
can raise
prices or stop developing one of the competing lines in favor of
the other.

My conclusion from this announcement is that AIsquared couldn't

Don't kid yourselves, this means there will be fewer options to
the blindness community. This buy out in my mind is likely due
to a series of poor business and management decisions over the
past few years by AISquared.
No attacks please, I am just giving my opinion.

All I can say right now is wow! This is huge news from the
world of Adaptive Technology and at least for me, very
unexpected. I haven't processed this fully yet to put my
thoughts and opinions together on it.
