I'm not sure what version of Word we're talking about here, but in Word
2013, for a single document, I just hit alt+f, which takes me to the
Info option in the file pull down. I then hit tab twice to get to the
button that unprotected the file and press the space bar. This is when I
open a document on a shared drive or from some other location where it's
protected.
If I'm viewing a document that was an attachment to an Outlook message
then I use the same steps above, but I end up in the save as dialog and
I save it to a local drive before editing it.
I need to follow the steps below to keep Office from protecting these
files in the first place.
