Generally speaking, when you use voice dictation, you need to speak the
names of punctuation marks, usually in a slightly different tone of
voice and with minor pauses around:

Hi, comma, how are you, question mark. I'm fine, period.

Otherwise, you get one solid blob of text. You also need to be careful
that the device doesn't also pick up other voices, including the smart
phone's. I read lots of messages that are produced by voice input, and
in addition to lacking punctuation, they also have random chunks of text
that are obviously notifications from the device or snippets from other
speech.

Voice recognition isn't perfect, so people who use it need to be willing
to do some proofreading.
