Windows 8.1 machines are defragged the same way you defrag earlier
Windows machines. Actually, you probably don't have to do anything since
the machine defrags in the background. I don't have my machine on over
night, and the few times I've remembered to defrag manually, I discover
I don't need to because the disk was last defragged a day or two ago. In
Windows 8.1, the process is called optimization. The steps are these:
1. Tap the start key.
2. type "defrag" in the search box and wait a few seconds.
3. when the phrase "defragment app" appears in the edit box, press enter
on it. If it doesn't appear there, you may need to arrow down or down
then up.
4. The usual defrag screen appears next. the computer says something
about defragging to optimize performance. focus should be on the list of
drives. Tab once to the Analyze button and press enter.
5. After the drive has been analyzed, tab twice from the drive list to
the Optimize button. Press enter there to begin the defrag process.
