Hi, Sherry,
The problem is not Outlook. It's Gmail itself. The important label gets
applied before the mail gets delivered to Outlook.

Thanks Pratik, this explanation totally makes sense. What a pain! It would
be nice to at least have the option of telling Outlook that anything from a
given sender should not default to important. I used to use Outlook for
work several versions ago & it was wonderful. Now there are numerous
hassles involved with using it including this one. I wish MS had not
stopped supporting Windows Live Mail as it did not have this problem.
That's my rant for today...
Thanks,
Sherry Wells

Hello,
I assume that you have a Gmail account which you're filtering through
Outlook. This particular problem is an ugly result of how Gmail deals with
its messages. Generally, there are no folders as you might understand the
concept in Gmail. Instead, Gmail has labels. These labels are applied by
Gmail to each message that comes in. The important label is applied to a
message that Gmail considers to be--well, important. This label gets applied
along with the label "inbox" or another folder's label. When you delete a
message from what you consider to be "inbox" or another folder, the message
is not actually deleted unless there are no other labels associated with
that message. If the message has the important label associated with it, you
deleting the message from a particular folder only removes the inbox or the
other label from that message. The important label is still associated with
that message. Unfortunately, you have no other choice but to go through the
"important" folder and delete the messages that you no longer wish to have
there.
Hope this explanation helps.
Regards,
Pratik

Subject: [VICUG-L] Unwanted Emails Showing Up in Important Mail Folder
Hi all,
I am using Outlook 2016 & yearning for Windows Live Mail which is no longer
supported. For some reason, many many emails that I have deleted are still
retained in my important mail folder. These emails were not originally
marked as important from the sender & they are no longer in my trash folder.
Why would they be retained in my important mail folder when I never moved
them there & have deleted them & cleaned out my trash folder. Any ideas of
how to stop this would be appreciated as I am getting annoyed at having to
delete things twice.
